san andreas artist’s studio, mt. washington
This existing 1930s house is located on a steeply sloping site in the Mount Washington neighborhood of Los Angeles. We located the studio a full level below the ground floor of the existing home so that its roof surface could double as a spacious deck. It offers an outdoor living area protected from the sun by a large Eucalyptus tree overhanging the deck and offers shade and privacy.
The bifold door skin — made from greenhouse components — forms the north wall of this artists‘ studio, creating a diffuse-lit and comfortably-climatized zone inside but also, through its corrugation and simultaneously reflective and translucent surface, the volume changes throughout the day and glows like a lantern in the evening.
